Discover the role of computational geoscience using Microsoft Excel

CSA Global Principal Geologist, Dr Carl Brauhart and Exploration Manager, Marcus Willson are looking forward to meeting you at Target 2017 organised by Geoconferences (WA) Inc, between 19-21 April 2017.

Dr Brauhart currently leads the OSNACA (Ore Samples Normalised to Average Crustal Abundance) Project in his capacity as an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for Exploration Targeting (University of Western Australia) and will present at Target 2017 on “Computational Geoscience Using Microsoft Excel”.

The OSNACA Project was established as on open-source project to maximise the exchange of ideas between academia and industry and may prove useful to exploration geologists wishing to learn more about the geochemistry of the ore deposits we search for globally.

The event will cover topics, such as the mineral systems approach to exploration targeting, applied exploration geophysics and geochemistry and 3D exploration and will provide hands-on training opportunities.

More than 250 attendees from around the Australian and international mineral exploration community will attend a number of plenary sessions, panel discussions and poster sessions; focusing on multi-commodity exploration from greenfields at the regional scale through to brownfields and near mine exploration.

His presentation will:

  • Showcase OSNACA Transform as a new metric to quantify similarities and differences between ore element signatures
  • Explain OSNACA Transform step by step in Microsoft Excel
  • Illustrate the resultant “Magmato-Hydrothermal Space” using 685 samples from around the globe from the OSNACA Database
  • Demonstrate the lithogeochem calculator; a new method to quantify similarities in immobile element lithogeochemical signatures
  • Review the lithogeochem calculator step by step in Microsoft Excel, and
  • Illustrate lithogeochem calculator with volcanic-hosted massive sulphide datasets from Central Queensland.
Carl Brauhart

Dr Carl Brauhart
PhD (Ore Deposit Geology), BSc (Geology), MAIG, MSEG

Carl is an exploration geologist with more than 20 years’ experience in gold and base-metal exploration, spending much of that time working in frontier areas of Western Australia on grassroots projects. He has a particular interest in geochemistry, both exploration geochemistry and ore deposit geochemistry, and a passion for field work, particularly mapping. Carl has maintained a close association with the Centre for Exploration Targeting at the University of Western Australia where he is the lead researcher on the OSNACA Project (an ore deposit geochemistry research effort).

Marcus Willson - Principal Geologist - Gold

Marcus Willson
MSc (Geology), BSc (Geology), MAIG, RPGeo

Marcus has close to 30 years experience in the mineral industry, ranging from early stage exploration activities, exploration management, strategy development and implementation, through to senior corporate management roles. Marcus has specialist expertise in Archaean and Birimian orogenic, intrusion-related, and porphyry-related gold (with copper), regolith interpretation and geochemistry as well as in litho-tectonic/structural analysis in the context of hydrothermal mineralisation. He uses these skills to deliver integrated, mineral systems-based, geological models and targeting advice. He is a leader with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrated competency for applying advanced techniques to enhance project value delivering an excellent track record of discovery. Marcus’ significant corporate experience provides excellent skills in project risk analysis, ranking and valuation.
