CSA Global Principal Consultant-Nickel, Tony Donaghy presented on ‘Nickel – The Forgotten and Essential Battery Metal’ at The New World Metals Conference between 11-12 December 2019, The Westin Perth, Western Australia.
The New World Metals Conference (formerly known as the Technology & Low Emission Minerals Conference) will cover Lithium, Graphite, Vanadium, Cobalt, Manganese, Magnesium, Zinc, Nickel, Helium, Hydrogen, Rare Earths and other minerals associated with technology, battery storage and emission free power transmission.
ABSTRACT
The accelerating global transport transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is underpinned by the need for energy storage to power Electric Vehicles (EVs). The dominant metal by weight in nearly all preferred battery technologies in current and expected use in EVs is nickel. This presentation will examine traditional nickel sources and markets, current nickel demand and supply, and investigate potential future nickel demand as ‘EV uptake’ in the market increases. The requirements of EV battery producers will require specific types of nickel supply (sulphates/hydroxides) into the future and this will have ramifications on how nickel will be produced and sold.
