CSA Global Principal Consultant, Bill Power will present at the March MEGWA (Mining and Exploration Group Western Australia) Technical Talk on “How we won the GoldCorp Challenge – A look at the Winning Entry – What has changed, What is the same.”
The presentation will be held on Wednesday 21 March, 2018 from 5:30-7:00pm at the Irish Club in Subiaco.
About the presentation
In March 2000, GoldCorp offered a challenge to exploration experts anywhere in the world, offering US $500,000 in prize money to help find the next 6 million ounces of gold at its high-grade gold mine at Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. Bill Power was one of the circa 8 team members of the Australian Fractal Graphics – Taylor Associates team that won 1st place. Bill concentrated on the data QC, structural geology, and the 3D solid geology modelling aspects of the winning entry.
Since arriving in Australia in the 1989, Bill has worked with CSIRO, where he concentrated on the relationships between fault zones and mineral deposits. He then proceeded to various consulting roles in minerals exploration and development, followed by work in the oil and gas sector doing geomechanics or the area where rock mechanics impacts on drilling and development. Bill has specialist experience with rock mechanics and analysis of faults and other rock discontinuities. This includes aspects of fault zone evolution, fault seal, critically stressed fracture arrays, analysis of palaeo-stress and strain history using fault and fracture observations, and the implications of geological history and stress on structures important in minerals and oil and gas exploration.
